Welcome to Elderfield romance runs through nine relationship characters: Alice, Blorph, Celeste, Edwin, Ellie, Josh, Molly, Sam and Tanner. You build each relationship with gifts — one per day, two per week, per villager — and the developer's stated plan is that every character's relationship tree can end either romantically or platonically, framed as spouse versus roommates. This page covers who is involved, how gifting drives the track, and what is still unconfirmed.

Who Is Romanceable

The community wiki groups the nine as relationship characters and separates them from the merchants, officials and supernatural figures who do not use the system. Most are former schoolmates of the player, which is why several of them share the School as a location alongside Town and the Farmhouse.

How the Relationship Track Works

Gifting is the whole engine. The wiki sets the limit at one gift per day and two gifts per week, and each character page records personal preferences that override the shared gift tables. The neoseeker gift guide explains why that matters: a gift's reaction is defined per villager, so an item the whole town likes can still be hated by one person.

MechanicDocumented detail
Gift limitOne gift per day, two per week per villager
Personal preferencesOverride the universal gift rules for that character
Marriage requirementsListed per character page, where applicable
Friendship-mail rewardsRecorded per character page
Romance outcomePlanned as romantic or platonic (spouse or roommates)

The two characters who differ most from the norm are Blorph and Celeste. Blorph's page warns that many meals and drinks other villagers love are hated gifts for him, while Celeste's listed choices are liked gifts rather than personal favorites, which means her quick-gift row is a starting point rather than her best items.

  • Alice collects VHS tapes and gives two treasure maps across the game.
  • Blorph wants to experience life on the surface, so his areas are the Sewers and the Farmhouse.
  • Celeste is ghostly, so she is often at the Library and Greystone Estates rather than around Town.
  • Molly runs the Workshop, which makes her the most mechanically useful friendship early.
  • Tanner lives near the Old Woods, tying his track to Old Woods progression.

Reading the character pages in order is the fastest way to plan a romance route, because the same pages carry the marriage requirements and the friendship-mail rewards. The gift limits mean a two-gift week is the maximum, so the practical loop is one loved gift plus one liked gift per villager per week rather than many small ones.

  • Plan two gifts per villager per week at most.
  • Prefer one loved gift over several liked ones.
  • Check the character's own page for marriage requirements before committing.
  • Watch friendship-mail rewards, which arrive as the track advances.

What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

The developer's romance post spells out the design intent but dates from before release, so the exact live behaviour at the end of a relationship tree is to confirm. The confirmed parts are the nine characters, the gift limits and the fact that preferences are personal. Exact friendship thresholds for marriage, the number of relationship stages, and whether every character has a complete romance route in the released build are not documented yet.

For the gifting side in detail, see the gifts page, and for the character setup that feeds into these relationships, see character creation.

FAQ

Who can you romance in Welcome to Elderfield?

Nine characters use the relationship system: Alice, Blorph, Celeste, Edwin, Ellie, Josh, Molly, Sam and Tanner. The community wiki lists each one with a role and set of main areas, and each character page records gift preferences, friendship-mail rewards, school rewards and marriage requirements where they apply.

How many gifts can I give per day?

One gift per day and two gifts per week per villager. Personal favorites override the universal gift rules, which is why the same item can be loved by one character and hated by another.

Is there actual romance and marriage in Welcome to Elderfield?

The developer has said the plan is to let players reach the end of any character's relationship tree and then choose whether that ending is romantic or platonic, described as roommates versus spouse. Because that post is from the pre-release period, treat the live implementation as `to confirm` until you reach the end of a relationship in the released build.

Which characters are former schoolmates?

Most of the nine are framed as former schoolmates of the player: Alice, Edwin, Ellie, Josh, Sam and Tanner, with Molly also appearing at the school. Blorph is a sewer-dwelling resident and Celeste is a ghostly resident, so they sit outside that framing.

Do relationships affect anything besides romance?

Yes. The wiki attaches friendship-mail rewards and school rewards to the same characters, and several treasure maps come directly from them — Alice gives two maps, Molly, Celeste, Blorph and Josh give one each. Friendship is a gameplay lever, not only a romance track.
