A Dungeon Settlers how to research walkthrough is short, but the order you pick is not. You build a Research Station indoors, choose a node, and the work runs over time. The interesting decision is which branch to spend your limited Tech Books on, and the available guides agree on one rule: pick the node whose first result you can use immediately.
Setting Up and Reading the Tree
The beginner guide describes the mechanics: the Research Station has to be indoors, you select it and click Research or open the Research panel in the top right, and then you click an available node to target it. The walkthrough adds the practical check — confirm the node is actually progressing before you head out again.
| Research node | First usable result | When it earns its books |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Processing | Wooden gear and the path to the Goddess Statue | Early, because it removes a leveling gate |
| Basic Storage | Equipment storage and Cloth Bags | When capacity, not combat, sends you home |
| Wood Processing II | Stronger wooden combat gear | When the active party still carries weak weapons |
| Basic Cuisine | Cooking Workstation | When hunger warnings start changing plans |
| Basic Alchemy | Alchemist Workstation and consumables | Once you know which product you want |
The research guide frames the whole tree as a bottleneck question. Ignore the far end of a branch and look at the first thing it unlocks; if nothing changes before your next expedition, it probably was not the research you needed most.

The Recommended Early Order
When several branches look urgent, a fixed order keeps you moving. The research guide's sequence is driven by the current limit rather than by the tree's structure.
| Step | Node | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wood Processing | Opens the leveling chain and wooden equipment |
| 2 | Basic Storage | Cloth Bag adds carrying capacity when loot is the limiter |
| 3 | Wood Processing II | Upgrades combat gear once members can actually wear it |
| 4 | Cuisine | Turns dungeon food into a controlled supply loop |
| 5 | Basic Alchemy | Recovery and utility items, including the Return Scroll |
| 6 | Wooden Housing | Log Floor gives Quality 5 for room tiers and better recovery |
The walkthrough's ordered list overlaps and extends this: Hunting Processing for the Repair Stand before long pushes, Bone or Carapace Processing for the Golem attempt, and Campsite Setup for deeper expeditions. A short checklist for spending books:
- Check the first unlock against your current bottleneck before buying.
- Do not research a branch whose material you cannot supply yet, such as bone recipes without bone.
- Hold Staff Crafting until a caster exists and the elemental component is obtainable.
- Use the handbook and the research panel to confirm prerequisites rather than guessing.
Because research costs and node placement shift between patches, treat the ordering as to confirm. The resources page covers where the Tech Books and materials for these branches come from.
A few points worth keeping in view:
- Check the first unlock against your current bottleneck before buying.
- Do not research a branch whose material you cannot supply yet.
- Hold Staff Crafting until a caster and the elemental component exist.
- Re-read the tree after each patch, since node costs move.
FAQ
How do you research in Dungeon Settlers?
Build a Research Station indoors, then either select the station and click Research or open the Research panel at the top right. Click an available node to make it the active target; the walkthrough adds that you should check prerequisites and confirm work is progressing before you leave on another expedition.
What should you research first?
Wood Processing. A dedicated research guide takes it first because it opens the early leveling path toward the Wooden Goddess Statue, which is what turns a full experience bar into stats. A walkthrough lists the same node first for wooden equipment.
What does Basic Storage unlock?
Bags and storage. The research guide highlights the Cloth Bag, which adds 50 Max Weight, and notes that across four active members that is up to 200 extra carrying capacity before existing space. It recommends the node once the inventory, not combat, is what ends your runs early.
When should you research Cuisine or Alchemy?
When food or consumables become the bottleneck. The guide moves Cuisine forward when hunger warnings start changing plans, and treats Basic Alchemy as worth it only once you know which product you want, such as a Return Scroll for safer deeper runs.
What limits research progress?
Tech Books and Expedition Rank. A walkthrough explains that research moves left to right through tiers gated by Tech Books, and chests, floor 3 plus Dungeon Cores and researcher NPC quests are its listed sources. Expedition Resolutions raise the member cap and add new races at Rank 2 and 3.
