A Dungeon Settlers guide has to explain two systems that pull on each other: a colony sim above ground and a party-based dungeon crawler below it. You are sent by a guild to build a settlement on barren land, and almost everything you need for it comes out of a corrupted dungeon. The Steam page sums the hook up in one line: manage an expedition, house and feed your people, then take them deep into a merciless dungeon and win with strategy. This page covers the loop, the first-day order that community guides agree on, and what the Early Access build actually contains.

What Dungeon Settlers Is

Dungeon Settlers is developed and published by CanOpener, with WhisperGames also listed as a publisher. It is a strategy game where a small band of settlers runs a base and takes on expeditions. The two halves are joined: the settlement gives you food, beds, gear and research, and the dungeon gives you the materials and technology the surface cannot provide.

SystemHow the sources describe it
SettlementBuild rooms, grow food, research technology, craft gear, keep settlers happy and productive
ExpeditionsTake a party of up to four settlers into randomized floors for resources, fights and loot
CombatReal-time with a pause button and an autocast option for routine fights
ProgressionGear, inscriptions, research unlocks and reputation rather than a single skill tree
DungeonsThemed regions with several floors, modifiers, resource veins, merchants and chests

A creator preview frames the long-term goal as pushing back the corruption that comes from a dungeon core, and notes the story is delivered through dialogue windows, guild messages and random events rather than big cutscenes. That is worth knowing before you buy: the draw is the colony-and-crawl loop, not a cinematic campaign.

First Days in the Settlement

Community beginner guides converge on the same order of operations, and it is a good checklist to follow while the tutorial is still thin. Several of these steps come from a third-party beginner guide rather than the developer, so treat the exact order as a starting point to confirm in your own save.

  • Collect the starting supplies from the Support Wagon before you build anything.
  • Build a Basic Workstation and craft textiles, a piece of cloth armor and a couple of arrows.
  • Recruit your first settlers so work and expeditions can run at the same time.
  • Make one short dungeon run for wood, grass and easy kills, and do not go deep on day one.
  • Place beds and stock food before night, because sleeping on the ground gives only a short comfort bonus.
  • Build a Research Station as early as you can and put someone on research.

The Research Station has to sit indoors, so a basic house is part of that priority. The in-game handbook, opened in game with F5, lists room types and their requirements, which is the fastest way to find out what a workshop, lab or temple needs.

First Dungeon Runs

The first dungeon you can enter is the Veil of Silence, and the expedition screen shows the floors available, the day or night state, and any bonus or malice modifiers. A creator playthrough of the opening hours shows the intended rhythm: give each settler a job priority, hand arrows to the archers, then clear one floor and come back rather than gambling on depth. Monsters do respawn if you linger, so the run is a round trip, not a full clear.

Expedition topicDocumented detail
Party sizeFour at launch, later raised to six at Rank 2 and eight at Rank 3
Health modelHealth is split between torso and head; head damage is the dangerous kind
EnergyEvery ability spends energy, so burning skills on weak mobs forces early rest
ReturnA portal on each floor lets you go home or descend further
LootMana stones, raw hide, tech books, herbs, food and soul stones from bosses

Energy and mood are the two clocks that end a run early. Community advice is to keep weak fights to basic attacks, save skills for real threats, and research the encampment so you can sleep indoors underground instead of on the floor.

Research, Leveling and What Early Access Contains

Research is book-gated. A creator playthrough shows that you start with eight tag books and two nodes already unlocked, Wood Processing and Basic Storage, and that Wood Processing leads to better armor and the Wood Goddess Statue. The statue is where you level settlers: you offer mana stones at minimum, normal or plentiful amounts, pick from a rolled set of inscriptions, and better offerings give better stat gains. A community thread on the first level up notes that rolling a strong inscription on a fresh recruit can pay off for a long time, which is why some players hoard mana stones early.

  • Regional content: the launch build ships two of six planned regions plus the Abyss challenge mode.
  • Difficulty: five management difficulty levels run from Easy up to Devastation.
  • Roadmap: the developer expects roughly two years in Early Access while adding regions, races, weapons and quality-of-life work.
  • Verification: the community wiki tracked here covers build DS_B.0.4.23, so numbers shift between patches.

Patch notes on the Steam community hub show the game being tuned live, including reverts to archer balance and a long list of quality-of-life fixes. If you want to go deeper from here, the pages linked below cover the pieces one at a time.

FAQ

What kind of game is Dungeon Settlers?

It is a colony sim built around a party-based dungeon crawler. The Steam page calls it a colony sim based dungeon crawler where you manage an expedition, build a settlement on barren land, feed and shelter your people, then lead them into the dungeon and win fights with strategy.

When did Dungeon Settlers enter Early Access?

It launched into Steam Early Access on September 4, 2026 for Windows and macOS at $24.99. The store page lists Simulation, Strategy and Early Access, single-player, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing, and about 1,360 user reviews at the time of writing.

Can you build a base and skip the dungeon?

No. Official material and creator previews agree that the two halves feed each other: the settlement crafts gear, food and research, while almost every better material and technology comes from below. A preview describes pushing into the corrupted dungeon as the essential long-term goal.

How big is the party you take into a dungeon?

At launch an expedition was capped at four settlers, and a later update raised the maximum to six members at Rank 2 and eight members at Rank 3. That scaling is documented in the official patch notes posted on the Steam community hub.

Does Dungeon Settlers have multiplayer?

No. The Steam store page lists the game as single-player only, with no co-op or online multiplayer categories, and a creator preview of the Early Access build states there is no multiplayer or co-op as far as is known.
