Fertilizer is the multiplier behind everything in Alchemy Factory, and the reason is indirect: the cauldron does not care whether its item value came from expensive ores or cheap plants, only that you do not repeat an item. That means fertilizer upgrades let you make plant byproducts at a fraction of normal cost and then turn those into advanced materials. The entry recipe is deliberately cheap — Basic Fertilizer is one Plant Ash and one Quicklime Powder.
How Fertilizer Works
The Codex lists Basic Fertilizer in the Fertilizer category with Plant Ash at 1x and 15/min plus Quicklime Powder at 1x and 15/min. From there, the value you can deliver per second scales through the documented tiers, which is what makes high-efficiency fertilizer the foundation of a cauldron economy rather than a side activity. The community guide's example is a dozen cauldrons fed by Flax, Sage, Redcurrant and Lavender producing Lapis Lazuli at roughly a third of the traditional production cost.
| Fertilizer output | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| Plant byproducts | Cauldron input value at a fraction of normal cost |
| Growth Potion | Higher-yield cauldron feeding |
| Fertile Catalyst | Late-game nutrient density |
| Panacea Potion | Top-tier nutrient value and rate |
Fertilizer and Nutrient Tiers
The Codex nutrient selector publishes five options with their values and per-second rates. These are the values the calculator uses when estimating heat and nutrient cost, so they double as a progression ladder from early farming to endgame cauldron feeding.
| Tier | Nutrient value | Per second |
|---|---|---|
| No Fertilizer | — | — |
| Basic Fertilizer | 144 | 12 |
| Advanced Fertilizer | 720 | 144 |
| Growth Potion | 6,480 | 2,160 |
| Fertile Catalyst | 24,000 | 6,000 |
| Panacea Potion | 200,000 | 20,000 |

Why Fertilizer Efficiency Comes First
The guide's position is uncompromising: fertilize first, everything else later. It notes that cauldron cost efficiency against normal production ranges from about 50% better to 200% worse depending on the item, which is exactly why the input cost matters so much — a cheap fertilizer input moves every recipe toward the good end of that range. It also recommends waiting until at least 200%, and possibly 300%, Fertilizer Efficiency before spending points on conveyor speed, fuel or negotiation.
- Fertilizer upgrades are described as the "secret technique" for a dominant mid-game.
- Plant byproducts from upgraded fertilizer cost a third to a quarter of normal materials.
- The cauldron ignores the source of value, so cheap inputs do not degrade the output.
- Points in logistics, fuel or negotiation are quality-of-life, not the main line.
- Switch to Growth Potions as soon as they are craftable to raise yield sharply.
Getting the input chain right early pays off for the whole run:
- Build a Compost Bin or equivalent before scaling any cauldron line.
- Keep Plant Ash and Quicklime Powder flowing rather than batch-producing fertilizer.
- Upgrade Fertilizer Efficiency before adding cauldrons, not after.
- Re-check nutrient values after 1.0 in case the Early Access figures moved.
What is not confirmed.
The exact Plant Ash and Quicklime Powder production chains, the cost of moving from Growth Potion to Fertile Catalyst, and whether the nutrient values changed with 1.0 are not documented yet; the Codex figures carry an Early Access version stamp. For how those values are spent, see cauldron recipes, and for which upgrade tracks compete with fertilizer, see the upgrade guide.
FAQ
How do you make Basic Fertilizer in Alchemy Factory?
The Codex recipe entry lists Plant Ash at 1x with a rate of 15/min and Quicklime Powder at 1x, also 15/min, in the Fertilizer category. That is the entry-level fertilizer recipe, and everything more advanced builds on making plant nutrients cheap.
What are the fertilizer and nutrient tiers?
The Codex nutrient selector lists five options with increasing strength: Basic Fertilizer at 144 value and 12 per second, Advanced Fertilizer at 720 and 144 per second, Growth Potion at 6,480 and 2,160 per second, Fertile Catalyst at 24,000 and 6,000 per second, and Panacea Potion at 200,000 and 20,000 per second.
Why is fertilizer so important in Alchemy Factory?
Because the cauldron does not care where its item value comes from as long as you do not repeat an item. The community guide points out that with fertilizer upgrades you can make plant byproducts at a third or a quarter of the normal production cost, then feed those into cauldrons for advanced materials at a fraction of the usual cost.
When should I switch from Basic Fertilizer to Growth Potions?
As soon as you can make them. A player in the mid-late game tips thread says that as soon as Grow Potions are available you should either build or download a blueprint for them, because it massively increases yield compared with running on Basic Fertilizer.
How far should I push fertilizer efficiency?
The guide's target is at least 200% and possibly 300% fertilizer efficiency before you spread points into anything else. Fertilizer Efficiency is a track in the Codex upgrade panel that starts at 100% Nutrient Value, so it scales the value of everything you feed the cauldrons.
